School Staff Wellbeing Workshop

In-person | Hilton Auckland, Karaka

Dates: Firday 8 May 2026 | Time: 9.30am–4.00pm NZT

Purpose of the workshop

Staff wellbeing in schools is now a key concern in most schools.
It is now directly linked to workforce stability, discretionary effort, staff retention, absenteeism, professional conduct, and organisational risk and achievements.

The School Staff Wellbeing Workshop has been developed by the Institute to support school staff to develop their wellbeing understandings to a level where they can improve and maintain positive wellbeing in their workplace rather than attend or experience ad-hoc or reactive responses.

This workshop is designed for school staff seeking to:

  • Protect  and support staff wellbeing

  • Build staff wellbeing capacity, boundaries, and effectiveness

  • Reduce hidden costs associated with staff burnout, turnover, and disengagement

  • Strengthen professional decision-making around wellbeing responsibilities

  • Improve return on investment from wellbeing initiatives already in place

This is not just a wellbeing awareness session.

It is a research-led professional forum focused on clarity, structure, and long-term value. Attendees will be able to identify the state of their own wellbeing and steps that could benefit them in the future

Research and model foundation

The workshop is grounded in the Institute’s Universal Wellbeing Model, developed through a 16 year wellbeing research programme conducted across education, health, community and diverse organisational systems.

The model supports school staff to:

  • Understand exactly what wellbeing is and how wellbeing is influenced.

  • Identify individual staff members personal wellbeing profiles.

  • Identify where pressure, and risk accumulate in the workplace.

  • Shift from reactive to prevention orientated staff wellbeing responses and systems.

  • Align wellbeing activity with leadership structures, policy, legislation, and accountability

Rather than adding new initiatives, the model helps school staff improve their positive wellbeing levels and maintain  their impact.

Wellbeing, performance, and return on investment

School staff increasingly invest time and resources into their work, yet often struggle to demonstrate impact.

This workshop explicitly addresses:

  • How wellbeing influences productivity, attendance, and staff effectiveness.

  • What school staff wellbeing levels are.

  • Where poorly structured wellbeing activity leads to role strain and diminishing returns.

  • How research-based wellbeing thinking supports more efficient use of time and resources.

  • Why prevention-oriented approaches reduce downstream costs.

By strengthening clarity and understandings of wellbeing, the workshop supports school staff to function, thrive and flourish in their workplaces in a best value manner.

What is examined during the workshop?

  • What wellbeing is?

  • How wellbeing is influenced and improved?

  • Where wellbeing responsibility sits within school systems?

  • How informal wellbeing labour can accumulate and creates risk?

  • The distinction between care, support, practice, and accountability?

  • How the Universal Wellbeing Model can be applied within school contexts?

  • What sustainable prevention looks like in practice?

The emphasis is on capability building, professional judgement, and long-term viability.
