Students and two professors from Saint Petersburg College experienced a FREEDOM Study Abroad Programme on Social Anthropology and Contemporary Literature between the 11th  and 26th May 2018. The highly interactive and experientially orientated programme conducted in Hamilton was a hit, and acknowledged as the best the faculty had experienced in 30 years.

FREEDOM’s customised Study Abroad programme immersed the students in New Zealand’s culture. Their visits and experiences included the Waikato Museum, Rangiriri Battle Site, Hobbiton, Waitomo Glow worm Caves, Hamilton Gardens, Bastion Point, Auckland Writers’ Festival, Woodlands, and a Rugby match between the Auckland Blues and Canterbury Crusaders plus an overnight stay at Hukanui Marae. There the students experienced a Haangi and were hosted by the people of Ngaati Wairere. The students were introduced to Maaori history and culture, and learnt their Pepeha and Waiata. The students talked of feeling transformed by their experiences and their programme. Their visit was capped off with a graduation ceremony, dinner, and gifts of “Sleeps Standing Moetu” by Witi Ihimaera, their very own Pounamu and FREEDOM T Shirts. The participants expressed their warm gratitude to FREEDOM for the unforgettable lessons and experiences they had in the Waikato.
